Who is your target audience?

A Forbes article reported that within the last 8 years social media usage has increased by 800%. There is a large pool of potential customers on the various platforms. In order to take advantage of these popular marketing tools, small businesses should consider social media marketing. In social media marketing, it’s important to understand the first stepping stone – finding your target audience.

What is a target audience?

Simply stated, a target audience is your business’s intended audience. This group represents your “ideal customer”.

Why is it important to identify a target audience?

It’s highly important to understand the “type” of audience you are reaching out to and market according to their interests, needs, etc. If you are marketing to a general audience, you may catch the attention of a few. However, if you are using target marketing which is likely to engage with your company due to their interests, you will increase success and efficiency.

You will be able to customize your products/services to better suit your ideal customer’s needs with target marketing. Furthermore, you will be able to tailor your advertising appropriately-considering the correct tone, language, style, etc. It would render your efforts useless if you were driving a general message to the wrong audience.

How can you identify your target audience?

Analyze your current clients. What do these clients have in common? Who do these clients look like? Consider this audience and identify characteristics such as age, gender, income, marital status, ethnicity, demographic, interests, etc.

Once you’ve gathered this information, create a customer profile. An example provided in an article by NOLO stated a maternity store focused in professional attire would identify their target audience as 25-40 year old, married women in the legal, financial, and real estate industries, within a 10 mile radius of the store. This is a perfect example of accurately identifying your target audience.

It is important to be specific when identifying your target audience. If your target audience is too broad, your advertising efforts will be less effective. A detailed understanding of your ideal customer acts as a foundation for all of your marketing efforts. With this strategy, your marketing campaign will produce better results.
